The Idea

Officine 19 started as a manufacturing-driven idea, fusing 3D printing, algorithmic design, and customisation. While working on mostly engineering problems, this project was, at first, an artistic outlet. The desire was to communicate the inspiration of art and technology, incorporating state-of-the-art production. This approach allows for user customisation, complex shapes and patterns, otherwise impossible to build with traditional technologies. Jewellery-making offers the perfect scale and creative freedom for these experiments.

The Product

The name “Officine” means “workshop” in Italian, highlighting the experimental nature of the project. The prime number 19, with its interesting mathematical properties, reflects its affiliation with nature and math. The production is on-demand, with most pieces custom-made for each user, thanks to 3D-printed moulds cast in precious metals using a lost wax method. There are now six collections featuring different variations of rings, necklaces, and bracelets. Each collection has a unique identity, inspired by fractals and mathematical structures. The jewellery has been exhibited at events like the Milano Jewellery Week and the Cluster Contemporary Jewellery in London.

The Process

Most jewellery pieces were designed using Rhinoceros3D, Grasshopper3D, or Python with an algorithmic approach. The prototypes were produced in-house with resin-based 3D printers, offering high resolution to capture fine details. The main production was outsourced to various manufacturers. After achieving a consistent product style, the brand was built from scratch, starting with a custom-designed logotype and typography, called Nineteen Sans. A cohesive design language was created across graphics, fonts, packaging, web, and products. A dark colour scheme, centred on black, was chosen to communicate elegance and a sense of space, contrasting with the shine of copper and precious metals, sometimes coupled with concrete. Hexagons and honeycomb shapes appear in the products and packaging, reflecting mathematical and natural influences. The website was built on Squarespace, offering the flexibility and speed needed to build an e-commerce platform with multiple products, while maintaining brand aesthetics. Stripe is the main payment processor. Most graphic design work is done with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After-Effect, and Premiere for the videos. A network of professionals contributed to social media, marketing, advertising, photography, and development. Photoshoots took place in various locations worldwide, including Iceland, Bali, Thailand, and the Dolomites.
